Red tape. Delays. Building codes. Changing requirements. Moving targets. More delays. Denials. Perseverance. Partnerships. Approvals. Hope. Set backs. More waiting ….
But still moving onward and upward!
That about sums up where we’re at in the process of getting Upstairs Arts open.
For those who don’t know, Upstairs Arts will be a holistic creative space in downtown Redlands. We will function primarily as an artist’s studio (we’ll have individual booths available to rent) and a gallery, but we will also have a dedicated prayer room, a hang-out lounge where you can drink loads of coffee from Back Alley Coffee downstairs, as well as space set aside for a wide variety of equipping classes. Although Upstairs Arts has been in the works for months (and in dreams for decades), we only recently began to publicly reveal little bits of info about what we’re doing. We wanted to stay pretty quiet until we became fairly certain it was going to happen. It will happen, but let’s just say the last month or two of jumping through the necessary hoops to get there has been a bit “interesting.”
Progress has been slow, but we ARE making progress. We had hoped to soft open in October, with a grand opening this month (November 2109) but obviously that didn’t happen. The good news is that we’ve already done a ton of work on the space, so once we get the necessary occupancy hurdles cleared, we can be ready to open officially in as little as 2-3 weeks.
In the meantime, we are continuing to do what we can. We have filed our 501c3 paperwork for The Arising Global (which is the nonprofit Upstairs Arts will operate under) and have all the necessary infrastructure in place. Additionally, since we are able to use the building in a low key way as private property, we continue to host our Friday worship gatherings at the Upstairs Arts site at 113 1/2 N. Fifth Street, Redlands (follow @upstairsworship on instagram to stay in the loop) and we’ve also recently added a weekly prayer meeting every Monday morning at 8:30 am. During this time we pray primarily for the city and surrounding area. All are welcome.
Speaking of prayer, if you are a praying person any prayers on our behalf are appreciated! Favor, provision, discernment, the right partners, etc. are all important. In particular my ability to jump into this endeavor full-time was contingent upon an earlier opening (among other things) so I need His wisdom for next steps. However, beyond all of that—we want to move in alignment with His heart. He IS the Way Maker and we know HE will make a way for all of HIS purposes to come to pass in His perfect timing (for a recent post on my personal blog on that topic click here).
Redlands and its people have been on God’s heart for a long time—we know this “jewel of the Inland Empire” will become a jewel in His crown. That’s why we believe this endeavor was birthed in the heart of God for His purposes—not ours. That means the ball is in His court and that gives us great peace and confidence. Although there have been obstacles lately, there have also been so many miracles and “God-incidents” along the way that we had to start a book of remembrance to try to keep up with them! In our own power we can’t “make” anything happen and we don’t plan to try. But we will keep standing and “showing up” until He shows us otherwise.
As we do, we will do our best to keep you posted along the way. Keep an eye on our social media accounts and websites for updates. For artist inquiries, information on ways you can partner with us, or if you just want to say “hi” or share an encouraging word, you can email me at email@example.com
May you all continue to align with His amazingly good plans for your life as you “come up higher” in this season!
Blessings and joy,
Cindy Powell, Director, The Arising Global/Upstairs Arts
PS – If you’re in the local (Redlands) area, we’ll be having a “clean out day” on Tuesday, Nov 5th starting at 9am to start getting our prayer room ready. If you’re available to help anytime between the hours of 9am and 1pm on the 5th, please stop by!! Wear grubbies!
